Hatchery propagation did not reduce natural steelhead productivity relative to habitat conditions and predation in a mid-Columbia River subbasin

چکیده
For over 150 years, hatchery-origin anadromous salmon and trout have been reared released throughout the Pacific Northwest to mitigate for lost habitat sustain harvest opportunity. Some studies demonstrate that introgression of hatchery naturally produced fish may constrain conservation efforts through maladaptive genetic processes. However, empirical demonstrations influence these interactions on population productivity are lacking, making it difficult assess their importance relative other drivers productivity. We estimated effect proportion spawners (pHOS), proportionate natural (PNI), releases adult winter steelhead recruitment in Hood River, Oregon, a 27-year period record. Adult was not associated with pHOS PNI. positively ocean conditions, stream flow, release numbers, while negatively pinniped abundance. Our analysis highlights quantifying programs production environmental factors known affect natural-origin recruitment.

Susceptibility of Juvenile Steelhead to Avian Predation: the Influence of Individual Fish Characteristics and River Conditions
Identification of the factors that influence susceptibility to predation can aid in developing management strategies to recover fish populations of conservation concern. Predator–prey relationships can be influenced by numerous factors, including prey condition, prey size, and environmental conditions. We investigated these factors by using juvenile steelhead Oncorhynchus mykiss from the Snake ...
متن کاملGenetic Diversity in Steelhead before and after Conservation Hatchery Operation in a Coastal, Boreal River
—Allelic variation at 10 DNA microsatellite loci was assayed in scale samples of steelhead Oncorhynchus mykiss (n 5 333) collected between 1976 and 2003 from the lower main stem of the Kitimat River, British Columbia. Our objectives were to (1) investigate the genetic diversity of wild steelhead populations in the river before hatchery stocking began in 1984 (baseline samples: 1976–1977, 1983–1...
متن کاملRestricted gene flow between resident Oncorhynchus mykiss and an admixed population of anadromous steelhead
The species Oncorhynchus mykiss is characterized by a complex life history that presents a significant challenge for population monitoring and conservation management. Many factors contribute to genetic variation in O. mykiss populations, including sympatry among migratory phenotypes, habitat heterogeneity, hatchery introgression, and immigration (stray) rates. The relative influences of these ...
متن کاملEndangered and Threatened Species: Designation of Critical Habitat for Threatened Lower Columbia River Coho Salmon and Puget Sound Steelhead
We, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), will prepare critical habitat designation proposals for lower Columbia River (LCR) coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and Puget Sound steelhead (O. mykiss) currently listed as threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The areas under consideration include watersheds in the lower Columbia River basin in southwest Washington and n...
متن کاملDo beaver dams reduce habitat connectivity and salmon productivity in expansive river floodplains?
Beaver have expanded in their native habitats throughout the northern hemisphere in recent decades following reductions in trapping and reintroduction efforts. Beaver have the potential to strongly influence salmon populations in the side channels of large alluvial rivers by building dams that create pond complexes. Pond habitat may improve salmon productivity or the presence of dams may reduce...
